Before You Run Meta Ads: 5 Things Every Business Owner Needs to Know

Running Meta ads (formerly Facebook ads) can be one of the fastest ways to grow your business—but only if you’re ready. If you’ve ever felt tempted to hit that little blue “Boost Post” button and just hope for the best, you’re not alone. But the truth is, running ads without a solid foundation is a great way to waste money and get discouraged.

I help businesses set up Meta ads the right way—so their investment leads to real, measurable growth. If you’re thinking about running ads soon, here are five things you need to have in place first.

1. Know Your Offer (And Make Sure It’s Solid)

Before you spend a dime on ads, you need a clear, compelling offer. That might sound obvious, but I can’t tell you how many people run ads without fully understanding what they’re selling—or why anyone should care.

Ask yourself:

  • What problem does my offer solve?
  • Why would someone choose this over a competitor?
  • Is it easy to understand in just a few seconds?

If your offer feels fuzzy or complicated, take a step back and refine it. Ads can bring people to your door—but it’s the offer that gets them to walk in.

2. Define Who You’re Talking To

One of the biggest mistakes I see? Trying to speak to everyone. When you try to reach everyone, you end up connecting with no one.

Think about your ideal customer:

  • What do they want?
  • What are they struggling with?
  • Where do they hang out online?

The more clearly you define your audience, the easier it is to write ad copy that actually resonates—and the better your results will be.

3. Be Ready to Track Your Results

If you’re not tracking your results, you’re flying blind. At the very least, make sure you can see:

  • How many people clicked your ad
  • What actions they took after clicking (did they buy, sign up, leave?)

This could mean setting up a Meta pixel, using UTM parameters, or simply making sure your website analytics are working. Tracking is what lets you learn, optimize, and scale with confidence.

4. Don’t Ignore Your Website or Landing Page

Meta ads can bring people to your site—but if the page they land on doesn’t match the promise in your ad, or isn’t easy to use, you’ll lose them fast.

Make sure:

  • The page loads quickly on mobile
  • The headline matches the ad
  • There’s a clear call-to-action (like “Buy Now” or “Schedule a Call”)

A strong landing page turns clicks into customers. A weak one turns ad dollars into frustration.

5. Start with a Budget That Makes Sense

You don’t need a massive ad budget to get started, but you do need realistic expectations.

Start small (even $20–$30/day can be useful) and treat your early ad campaigns as research. See what works, what doesn’t, and build from there. The goal is to gather data, learn fast, and scale what’s working—not to “go viral” overnight.
